What exactly is a confirmation statement and why does Companies House require it?

Hi everyone! I’ve been running a small online business for a couple of years now and usually feel confident handling the basics, but the confirmation statement still confuses me a bit. I see it mentioned everywhere, yet different sources explain it differently. Some people say it’s just a formality, while others warn that missing it can cause serious issues. I’d really like to understand what the confirmation statement actually includes, why Companies House insists on it every year, and how strict they are about deadlines. If anyone can explain it in simple terms and maybe share personal experience, I’d really appreciate it.

That’s a very reasonable question, and I remember feeling the same way at first. The confirmation statement is basically an annual check to make sure Companies House has correct and up-to-date information about your company — things like directors, shareholders, and registered office.
This explanation helped me understand it much better confirmation statement What I like is that it explains not only what the statement is, but also why it exists. Once I realised it’s more about accuracy than bureaucracy, it felt much easier to deal with. Now it’s just a routine yearly task for me.
